Impacts is a cluster which started in 2000. It is a FP-V cluster of EC projects on anthropogenic impacts on the marine environment sharing common environmental and socioeconomic objectives. Impacts objectives are the understanding and remediation of impacts of human activities on the marine environment such as those of pollution, of chemicals as endocrine disrupters and of nutrient over-enrichment.
The impacts cluster operates by linking thematically complementary projects via (a) project web pages ; (b) cross representation ; (c) exchange of data ; (d) joint meetings of project leaders ; (e) workshops ; and (f) science-strategic inputs to European stakeholders.
The resulting RTD knowledge will (a) underpin Europe’s emergent management models on the cost-benefits of pollution reduction, rehabilitation
of degraded ecosystems and the sustainable development of the marine environment and (b) provide input to relevant conventions
(e.g. Osparcom, Helcom, Barcelona and Bucharest Conventions) in collaboration also with the Environment DG. The impacts
thought to be deliverable are :
- strategic science-based knowledge on the inventories, diversity, fluxes impacts and fates of polluants and nutrients in contrasting environments ;
- management models integrating transport, transformation and effects of polluants at the basin, regional and site-specific scales including impacts on the marine ecosystem ;
- development of options and strategies for dealing with anthropogenically caused environmental degradation ;
- scenarios for socioeconomic benefits arising from the reduction of anthropogenic effects on the marine environment.
The essays collected in this volume were all presented by the project leaders during the first workshop of the Impacts Cluster, in February 2002, Pau University, France.
